Featured Categories are Just as Valuable as Featured Posts

Posted on February 15, 2010 by Jason Schuller - 16 Comments

If you haven’t checked out my latest Video Theme yet, you might want to have a look. The brand new TV Elements 3.0 WordPress theme has what I think is a great new feature that I intend on implementing within many of my upcoming themes. I wanted to create a way where you could choose and feature “categories” similar to the way most themes allow you to feature posts.

With that in mind, I developed a featured category gallery for the new TV Elements theme that allows you to configure up to 12 categories of your choice. Each featured category automatically pulls the post thumbnail added to the latest post within that category. This new feature gives your users an awesome new way to interact with categories on your site. I am definitely looking into expanding the functionality of this new feature within future updates themes, but I think the simplicity of what I did with TV Elements was definitely a good start.

Jason, I purchased the 2.0 theme of TV elements. Is there a way to update to 3.0?

Any info would be a great help!
    Thanks!

    Jason,

I just recently purchased TV Elements 2.0, which is the theme I chose after much researching because it was by far the theme that excited me most and fit my needs the best.
I was about to install it this week or next, but now I will skip that and go directly to 3.0. And the 12 featured categories are even more perfect for what I want to do. THANKS a lot.

Glad to hear that you like what I came up with in 3.0. I realize that it is a very drastic change, but I think it is definitely for the better. Thanks for your comments.

    Hi Jason!

I am VERY amazed by the ideas, your mind comes up with :-) Your themes rock, and i can tell, you really had a plan, when you did them. They are rocking in terms of functionality but also when it comes to design. I adore you “Social-Life-Theme” :-)

Question: Will the “social-life-theme” updated in future or is it “part of the past” now?

    Love & Respect

    Nico

Nico… thank you very much for your comments. I really do appreciate users taking the time just to say “thanks”. As far as Social Life goes… I already have made several updates to the theme that I have not released yet. I have a few other things that I am working on, then will send out updates to Social Life.

Looking seriously at your Massive News theme.

I notice it has the “simple category widget” which is +++ for me.

Will it get the Featured Category Gallery you mention up above?

    tnks!

Currently this feature has only been implemented within the TV Elements 3.0 theme, but I do plan on integrating it into future themes as well.

    Jason,

I’m very impressed with what can be done with WP. Will you someday create videos to instruct customers on how to customize templates, or this is something that each individual has to grasp on their own?

I appreciate Press 75, great work! Look forward to learning more about WP and the themes you have to offer and the possibilities that exist with a little creativity.

    Peace

      George

I am doing several things to improve the theme customization process. The first step was creating a solid table of contents within each theme stylesheet that allows users to easily find what they are looking to customize.
