The Seven Five WordPress Theme v1.6

Posted on May 18, 2010 by Jason Schuller - 229 Comments

The “Seven Five” theme which I use on my personal website theSevenFive.com has become extremely popular since I first released it several months ago. Well, I just released Seven Five 1.6 which includes a bunch of great new customization features. You can now style the theme background, font colors, border colors and link colors right through the brand new theme options page. You can also arrange all the home page sections in whatever order you like using widgets. Have a look at the video below to get a better idea as to what I am talking about. You can download the new Seven Five 1.6 theme free right on the Press75.com home page. Have fun!!!

    Thank you so much for the updates. Being able to customize the entire theme from the options page is spot on. Also, not being able to organize the home page sections however I want was something that kept me from using the original version. Thanks again…

        Excellent theme. I really love it. I’d love to see support for Facebook and Soundcloud – but it’s already awesome. Great work!

        Hi Jason. Thank you so VERY VERY much for the updates. This theme will stick with me forever. It just keeps getting better and better. I have a YouTube vlogger channel and with the updates to come, I see that it will be even more easy to implement them into my theme. Is it possible that you will make it so, that it can be set up to an account and then retrieve my videos as they are uploaded?
        You are the best developer/designer out there :D

    Hi Jason, just to let you know the flickr feed does NOT work in either seven five version 1.0 or 1.5. Please check whether the download files are coded right or not. I’m in love with seven five. Have modified it to a great extent. The 1.5 last.fm feature and twitter is NOT working as well. Thanks :D

      The demo and my own personal site (both linked below) are running 1.5 without any Flickr or Twitter issues. For Flickr, make sure you have the RSS feed address added to the options page. If Twitter isn’t working, you probably have conflicting plugins activated. I would recommend that if you need further support that you purchase a support package for the theme.

    Love your theme, was looking for a streamlined Lifestream feed theme with minimal blog integration and this is perfect, thank you very much.

    Just a note on flickr not working; after inspecting my code it seems like I get a general feed instead of my own no matter how I set the feed (atom,rss etc). The link does however refer to my profile correctly.

    I do appreciate that I have to get the extra support, I’d just thought I’d bring the Flickr issue to your attention. I’ve tried the different variations and versions of both the RSS and ATOM feeds, with different localization languages and I’ve even hard coded my rss feed to the widgets/flickr.php. AND tried several of my different accounts and none of them works. All I get is the standard “all user” feed.

      The theme has been completely reworked, so you will probably have to re-customize 1.5.

          Timm… You have to understand that it is pretty much impossible for me to anticipate the potentially infinite number of customizations random users might make to these themes. Would you prefer that I don’t ever provide theme updates? It is a bit disappointing to read comments like this, especially considering that this is a free theme that I have spent hours of my own time to produce for users like yourself. For future customizations… I might recommend that you create a child theme.

            Jason, please dont be disappointed, I might have put my words out a little harsh. I appreciate your free themes, your time and the fact that you keep such great work free. All I am saying is that WHEN you make a free theme and by that, make some people that love your fine work dependent on that theme, then it is a sad fact that we (I), have to start over each time you update it. You have the skills to make a code thingy, that can make an update possible I like to think, but im possible wrong on that and if that is not industry standard then im just a spoiled little s*** (NOT)!

            Please, it’s no secret that by making a free theme, you spread your name and your work, it’s a part of your marketing and I myself have bought two of your themes and I also love them and use them and look forward to the updates, so dont feel offended when I ask for the possibillity of a easier way to update.

            I will look into this child theme you mention, thank you and also, just to be all straight here. Take a look at the reply I made BEFORE I made the above question ;D

            High five from Denmark and thank you for your reply by e-mail today.

              No worries Timm… I may have misunderstood the intention of your comment. Of course I am always researching ways to make theme updates (when I provide them) easier for those that have customized the theme. But again… it is pretty much impossible for me to know and plan for all the customizations you have made when updating the theme. Plus… in order to improve and add functionality, the theme code often has to change from the original version. This is why I recommend that you do not customize the theme directly. By creating a child theme for the original, you will ensure that none of your customizations will be lost when the theme is updated.

          Okay, you have to install the “Post”-Widget. And mark all Posts as “Uncategorized”. BTW: In Twitter-widget not only my tweets show up, but all who mention “drikkes” – which is quite annoying, because it’s a quite common norwegian word.

              Isn’t it possible to catch up with the RSS-Feed of the person’s tweets? How the widget does it now? Fetch the global Twitter search for that specific username? This improvement together with a pagination would be awesome.

              But your work is great anyway. The Side Blog theme looks good, too.

      Hi Fran, I was having the same problem on WordPress 3.0 but it turned out to be a plugins issue. I disabled all my plugins, activated the theme and then turned them all back on one by one.

      In my case the problem was that I already had the Last.fm Records plugin (that is including with this theme) installed separately. Once I deleted that plugin everything worked great! Including the Twitter widget.

      Thanks Jason for the great theme. Now I just need to figure out how to get pagination on my blog page ;-)

    Wow. This is an amazing theme (I was after a clean, ‘hub’-like space for my social media stuffs) – and really user friendly! I found it super-easy to install. My advice? Make sure you WATCH the video above; deactivate all your plug-ins; make sure you go to Appearance > Theme Options to customise the widgets; THEN use Appearance > Widgets to order them on your page.

    Now, the only thing I need help with (but alas am not a paid-up forum user) is how to display the first few lines of my blog only (accompanied by a ‘continue reading’ button, as per your own blog, Jason)? Currently, the whole long post displays. And as you may have noticed, I have a tendency to waffle on a bit… ;)

    Hopefully I’ll figure it out eventually. Am going to have a bash at customising colours next. Look forward to the You Tube/Vimeo and SoundCloud integration in the future *hint hint*

    1. I do not have a widget in my widgets section to support the “Custom Feed” section in the Theme Options section. How do I get that so I may add it to the homepage widgets?

    2. Does the simple video embedder plugin not work with this theme? I see it in the add new post section. But when I publish it does not show up in the post. Please lend some advice.

      1. It’s there… just look for “Seven Five – Feed”.
      2. The Simple Video Embedder is not integrated into this theme for several reasons… primary because for this particular theme it would be just as easy to add video within your post editor.

    Thanks I am not sure how I missed that one lol. Too bad for the simple vid embedder would have been slick. I love this theme becuase it is so vanilla and will be a cinch to skin. Do you recommend any of your other themes that share the features of this one but have simple embedder and are very stripped down design wise to allow easier skinning?

      Again… the Simple Video Embedder isn’t necessary with the Seven Five theme. If you wat to embed video, just place the URL to your video within the post editor wherever you want your video to be displayed.

    Hey,

    Thanks for the theme–looks great!

    I had a minor issue with the Last.fm plugin included–my blog is using a /blog folder for the WordPress installation, but the permalinks are based on the root directory.

    In the last.fm.records.php, ~line 61, it’s getting this option:

    I changed it to the following, which outputs the WordPress URL (which is usually the same, but can be different!):

    And that did the trick!

    I know that you didn’t develop the plugin and I’m not asking for a fix or anything, just want to post this here in case someone else comes across the same issue. :)

      Oops, WordPress ate my PHP!

      Line 61 has this as the default:
      echo get_option(‘home’);

      And if you have this issue, changing it to this should fix it:
      echo get_option(‘siteurl’);

      So instead of the ‘home’ option, you’re getting the ‘siteurl’ option.

    Actually got it working sort of. It seems it doesn’t like the format of the feed address.

    It doesn’t like the “v2″
    http://feeds.delicious.com/v2/rss/feedyourself

    I changed the address to http://feeds.delicious.com/rss/feedyourself and it worked. However the text description is missing.

        Text description showed up eventually. So it’s just the format of the feed address it doesn’t like.
        I modified your code in delicious.php and removed “v2″ from the address.

      Is there a possibility of adding a sidebar to the right? There’s all that empty space there that could be utilized for additional widgets or plugins.

        Sure, anything is possible to do. Please do note that the theme is already 960px wide which is standard for most screen resolutions which is why there is no sidebar.

          My resolution is 2560 x 1440 and it moves the twitter feed/flickr feed etc to the right of the screen.. so it does not appear to be locked to 960px wide… or there is a div issue.

    Love this simple theme Jason; but just wanted to let you know that it is having issues in the IE 8 beta (even in “compatibility view”.) For example, on your own demo site, the headings are invisible until moused over. On my own WordPress 3.0.1 install (fresh install with no plugins activated) there are other issues as well: menu and title missing, etc. Compatibility view fixes a fair bit of the issues, but the menu is out of alignment and icons/images are clipped.

    Think this is a pretty awesome theme, though couldn’t get it to do what I wanted for my site quick enough (I’m lazy). Thought I’d just post some comments as I didn’t think they had been posted already:

    - would be great if you could choose to display all categories on top blog part. Or, to exclude some (say if you moblog using Flickr, so then you don’t double-up in two categories). Wanted to display all my category posts but could only go with one.

    - would be great if for the YouTube section you could choose a playlist, rather than just your uploads. There seem to be a lot of playlist RSS generators but they only show a link instead of the video thumbnail.

    - Also, couldn’t get the Last.fm stuff working. There was no box for it in the config menu. Strange.

      You need to add the home page widgets in order for your content to show as specified within the setup and usage instructions. Click “Appearance” and then “Widgets” to add the Seven Five theme widgets in whatever order you like. I would recommend that if you need further assistance that you purchase a theme support package.

    Hello, Jason!

    First of all, thank you for this beautiful theme! I am using it since the very beginning, but sadly, there’s one thing I cannot fix – the pagination of the posts on the blog template.

    I can see that function sf_pagenavi is there (in blog.php), as well as your custom code in the functions.php. Unfortunately, I am not good at coding and I’m not sure what to do in order to make it works.

    I don’t want to ruin your theme with other’s codes so, please, if it’s not something huge, tell me what should I do. I have a nice sitemap plugin so people can see all of my post, but still.. it would be much better with pagination.

    Thanks in advance!

    Kind regards,
    Stefan

      There is nothing you need to do to enable pagination. Just set your Reading settings (how many posts you want to display on each page).

        Thanks for your answer! But I am still little confused. I’ve set everything – post on the main page as well as number of 1st level comments to show on each page. And it’s working, except that the “older/newer” links are missing. I’m using WP 3.0.1 and version 1.6.1 of your theme. Is there a newer version I should update to?

        You can see what I mean here: http://ex.nihilo.org/blog. The page “blog” is set with the blog template and is set to “latest 3 posts”. The blog is in bulgarian labguage so you might not be able to read it, but the important is that you’ll see the missing navigation links at the bottom of the page.

        I haven’t modified anything in your theme.

        Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for the awesome theme. BTW, posts pagination is not working at least on the tag posts display.

    The following code in sf_pagenavi seems to be failing and $numposts always gets a value of 1 (which leads to page navigator not being displayed):
    if(!is_category()) {
    preg_match(‘#FROM\s(.*)\sORDER BY#siU’, $request, $matches); } else { preg_match(‘#FROM\s(.*)\sGROUP BY#siU’, $request, $matches); }
    $fromwhere = $matches[1];
    $numposts = $wpdb->get_var(“SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT ID) FROM $fromwhere”);

    I replaced it with the following code when is_tag() was true, and it works now:
    $tag = get_query_var(‘tag’);
    $taxonomy = ‘post_tag’;
    $term = get_term_by(‘name’, $tag, ‘post_tag’);
    $numposts = 0;
    if ($term) {
    $tagposts = get_objects_in_term(array($term->term_id), $taxonomy);
    if ($tagposts) {
    $numposts = count($tagposts); }
    }
    Wordpress version is 3.0.4, Seven Five theme version is 1.6.1.

    Thanks again for the beautiful theme.

    Regards
    Faisal

      You can embed video using the Seven Five theme just like any other theme. Just paste the URL to your video within the post editor, and WordPress will do the rest.

    The theme has $page = add_theme_page( "Theme settings", "Theme Options", 8, 'sf_sevenfive_admin_menu', 'sf_sevenfive_admin'); . Actually, ’8′ should work for ‘Administrator . but I am not sure, why it is still inaccessible . Can you please help me how to let the option used by ‘Admins ‘ with ‘switch_themes’ or in any other way?

    I’ve added a stats widget to display the total number of posts, comments, categories, tags, and pages. It’s very basic, but provides some nice information on the home page. I posted about it here: http://www.meetjonb.com/2011/11/stats-widget-for-the-sevenfive-wordpress-theme/.
