WordPress 2.9 New Features and Press75.com Themes

Posted on November 29, 2009 by Jason Schuller - 26 Comments

WordPress 2.9 should be released to the public sometime within the next month or so, and if you didn’t already know, it will include several new features that will change the way you use Press75.com themes.

Post Thumbnails

This basically duplicates the functionality of my Simple Post Thumbnails plugin, allow you to easily add a post image of any dimension wherever you want in a theme. I am currently testing this functionality with my newer themes and will consider it as a potential replacement for the Simple Post Thumbnails plugin that I current use for all my themes.

Basic Image Editing

This allows you to scale and crop images within your media library within WordPress. I’m sure several of you will be very interested in this functionality. Personally, I prefer to edit my images prior to upload, but for those that need to edit on the fly, this is a must have.

Widgets Outside of Sidebars

Really, you could do this anyway prior to this new template tag, but I suppose this makes it official. I am playing around with different ways to introduce functionality and theme options primarily within widgets which would allow you to customize your theme in an infinite number of ways. This functionality will take that concept to the next step.

Media Embeds

Some of you love my Simple Video Embedder plugin, and some of you think it could use some improvement. The new Media Embeds functionality in WordPress 2.9 will change the way you embed media within my themes, making it much easier to embed virtually any type of video however you want.

There are several other features coming to 2.9, but these are the select few I thought you would be interested in regards to Press75.com themes. As soon as 2.9 is official, I will be updating all my themes to take advantage of these new features and more.

I hope you will be able to give us a solution to switch over to new post thumbnail on v2.9 instead redo every post. I did not use Simple video embedder because I created each single template for a specific embed code of player then custom key for a video file which gives me more flexible to change URL to the video anytime. It applied on VIMEO and others instead rely on plugin which will required me to update each post if I have to change the url to the video. I wont be ready to use the new media embed functionality yet. Glad WP improved on many things ahead of v3.0!

Looking forward to see the updates on On Demand which I still use it on our website.

Jed… Yes I plan on providing an optional “upgrade” option for people who plan on using the built-in WP functionality vs. the Press75.com plugins.

    Hi mate!

Didn’t know about the plugin until I read your post, I’ve been using Custom Fields for my thumbnails and your solution would be so much easier!

Nice to see WP incorporating a similar function!

    Cheers

Stu… Yes, I think what WP is doing with the core is very exciting. Going to change WP themes (not just mine) for the better for sure.

Absolutely… TV Elements is being re-designed and developed from the ground up. I am waiting on the latest release of WordPress so that I don’t have to update it again after its initial release.

    Hi Jason,

Love your templates over all others! Looks like WordPress 2.9 is about to be released! How long do you calculate that after 2.9 is officially released you’ll be updating the Video Elements template?

    Thanks and Happy Holidays!

All my themes have been tested and work PERFECTLY with WordPress 2.9. I am still working on a good way to make use of the new WP post image feature as well as a way to seamlessly upgrade posts from the Simple Post Thumbnails version.

Hey, I got your theme: On Demand, from my partner in work to make a vdeo blog about 2 or 3 months ago, but I never did it, and unfortunatly my partner passed away and in his memory I decided to do this blog, but WP has been updated and now when I install the theme and I add the images to the scroll bar, it stops working, as I understood from your blog that there are updates as WP has been updated now to a newer version.

So my question is is there a wa to fix my problem? as I just want to do this blog a a dedication to my partner or do i have to buy a new version of the theme?

    Thank you for your time…

    Tatiana

WIt looks like like a cool feature, but I would much prefer using an image editing program like Photoshop prior to uploading the photos. It gives me a lot more flexibility and options. Plus I can optimize the images for the web so they load a lot faster.Wordepress 2.9 is really wondeful verson to use one of the most coolest feature is Global undo/trash feature, that if you accidentally delete a post or comment you can bring it back from the grave. and Built-in image editor allows you to crop, edit, rotate, flip, and scale your images to show them whos boss.

I agree with you 100% on that, but amazingly we are in the minority. Most WordPress users want to be able to do everything from the dashboard.
